I am a proud son of Mexican immigrant parents who settled in the Yakima Valley in the late 1990s. Navigating higher education as a first-generation student coming from an agricultural background has been an empowering experience, yet the potential of opening the path for future generations of my community to pursue academia has been a greater investment. Through the knowledge and skills gained throughout my Husky experience, I aspire to influence societal change through legislation to build a more equitable and just society in which immigrants, farmworkers, and all communities are treated as the valuable members of society that they are.

From a young age, I wanted to help others in the community. I am from a marginated community that had minimal resources. I wanted to be a person that could help bridge that gap. During my sophomore year volunteered at a learning center and got a chance to see what families have to endure with little to no help. I started Cars4giving to provide vehicles for low-income families in Thurston County. I also am an advocate for giving people the tools so they can do better. With my UWT degree, I am now a Crisis Case Manager with Family Education and Support Service assisting families in Thurston County.

As a parent, partner, and community member, my time at UW has enabled me to grow in ways that I couldn’t have imagined as I continually find new ways to bring the concepts that I learn in class into my daily life. Changing from a deficit-based mindset to an asset-based approach has impacted both the community service I do as a West Covina Lions Club member and how I look at myself and others as someone who is neurodivergent. I don’t want to be held back by “I can’t”s, but be empowered by “maybe I could”s and I sincerely hope that I can inspire others to take that same chance to trust themselves and their skills so that they can see they’re so much more than any limitations placed on them by the world.

In this profession, my spirit of care is focused on helping people solidify their narratives, thereby cultivating dignity for themselves and their loved ones, up until and beyond their last breaths. Nevertheless, people do experience medicine inequitably at the end of life, and I am driven to help identify and mitigate those gaps. I am interested in holistic service delivery models which address social determinants of health among communities who have been historically underserved and ensure individuals have access to affordable, culturally sensitive, and high-quality support. In my research, I aim to demonstrate how community-based participatory approaches can be combined with implementation science to conduct pragmatic research activities to improve health inequities and establish evidence-based approaches supporting the scale-up and sustainability of locally-developed interventions.

My experiences at UW in multiple positionalities — an undergrad, a classified staff, a study abroad instructor, and a graduate student– have brought me to where I am today continuing to connect across differences. I believe that education is not just about learning to ask questions that will move an idea forward but it’s also about being humble enough to listen and learn from other perspectives. This has led me to my exciting graduate research which is focused on how to build more equitable and inclusive spaces for People of Color in birthing practices and centering on culturally congruent care.

Through my Husky Experience, I have realized my purpose in life is fueled by who I have always been, rooted in being an immigrant child who grew up in rural areas of the Philippines and whose parents worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for my future. It grows as I witness the devastating neurological sequela of cancer treatment. Because of my Husky Experience, my purpose in life has evolved to advocate for underserved communities through research and policy change.

On top of persisting through challenges with my theoretical quantum physics research without compromising my acting and dance training, I am using my time at UW to grow as a leader as I create community and engender social change. I founded a high school outreach organization called STEM Pals; and serve my peers through the Physics Department’s Climate & Diversity Committee (e.g., by helping start the Women+ in Physics club and the Undergraduate Mentoring Program). It is a privilege to be a Husky 100!

My academic work at UW Information School helped me recognize the importance of how information can be used in solving the communities’ problems. Working as an executive board member at AIMS and Student Leadership Council Representative gave me a strong sense of making an impact by being the voice of the voiceless and that leadership is not simply a title but also a way of life. Being the first in my family to pursue an education abroad, I realized there must be more access to information to make a positive social impact by incorporating sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation into my work. UW has made me a more confident, courageous, and patient person.

Overnight, a childhood spent singing and dancing in musical theater transformed into one spent in doctor’s appointments and IV infusions. Inspired by the struggles of others with my autoimmune condition and having had a glimpse into the medical world, I channeled my experiences as a patient and woman of color into exploring public health and technology as a means to eliminate racial health inequities and address the accessibility and cultural humility of medical care. Empowered with the knowledge and experience from my public health studies and internships, as well as work with community-based organizations as a volunteer and intern, I am determined to work with underserved populations as a public health practitioner, applying to my practice the understanding that the intersection of power, privilege, and identity affects how individuals experience illness and their ability to access healthcare.

When I arrived at the University of Washington, there were three questions I was looking to answer during my undergraduate experience: Where do I want to live? What do I want to do? With whom do I want to do it? Being a Husky enabled me to search for the answers through several study abroad experiences, professional internships, and student organizations. As I reflect on my UW adventures with graduation on the horizon, I realize that I’ve started to answer a fourth question – How do I want express myself? – which has taken form in a newfound and husky-influenced excitement in writing.
